Now available at WellSpan Health and Surgery Center in Hanover, new technology uses AI to provide faster, clearer imaging with a more comfortable patient experience

The newly opened WellSpan Health and Surgery Center in Hanover now offers the only MRI of its kind in Pennsylvania – and one of only 10 in the country – using artificial intelligence to provide the latest imaging technology to patients in southcentral Pennsylvania.

The Philips Ingenia Elition 3.0T uses a sophisticated MRI signal interpretation that can read and interpret patient data using AI, providing faster scan speeds, clearer images and a quieter, more calming experience for patients.

“We know we have some of the most highly skilled physicians and clinicians in our region. It’s only fitting that we pair those expert specialists with state-of-the-art technology – providing our patients with a truly exceptional care experience,” said Vicky Diamond, vice president of ancillary services, WellSpan Health. “This system puts the WellSpan Health and Surgery Center in Hanover squarely on the map as a destination for unmatched imaging capabilities.”

The Philips Ingenia Elition 3.0T has the highest available field strength of any MRI in standard clinical practice, producing higher resolution images and better detail than most others.

It also has vast improvements to patient comfort, with a larger, more open scanning tunnel for patients, reducing the risk of claustrophobia. It is also one of the quietest systems on the market.

In addition, scan times have been decreased by 30 to 40 percent, meaning less time for patients to spend in the scanning process. The system even uses video boards projecting a variety of soothing scenes or even pediatric friendly cartoons to increase comfort through the experience.

Appointments will be available Monday through Saturday at the WellSpan Health and Surgery Center and can be made by calling the scheduling line at 717-337-4103.

On March 4, the center opened at 1227 Baltimore St. The 80,000-square-foot facility provides outpatient surgery, lab, imaging and other expanded services. For more information on the WellSpan Health and Surgery Center, visit WellSpan.org/WHSCHanover.

WellSpan Health today announced the promotion of Kimberly Brister to the position of Senior Director of Talent Acquisition, Diversity and Inclusion – an expanded role that includes leadership of the regional health system’s continuing efforts to enhance diversity and create a more inclusive environment.

The appointment is the latest step in WellSpan’s long-range strategy to build an engaged, diverse and inclusive workforce of the best and brightest from all walks of life, according to Bob Batory, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, WellSpan Health.

“As the leading provider of comprehensive health care services in central Pennsylvania, we feel a deep sense of responsibility to ensure our team members understand and can provide quality, culturally appropriate care to an increasingly diverse community,” Batory said. “Providing exceptional care for all begins with an organization that seeks out, understands and respects the differences – both within our workforce and within our community.”

He noted that the decision to dedicate a leadership position to diversity and inclusion is consistent with WellSpan’s core values, its mission and its commitment to fostering a culture where individuals feel respected, are treated fairly and have an opportunity to excel in their chosen careers.

Brister, of York, previously served as director of talent acquisition for WellSpan Health.

“I’m excited to expand our efforts to recruit and retain a diverse workforce,” Brister said.
“It’s equally important to continue our work fostering environments of inclusion and better understanding those we work with and care for in our communities. We gain strength when our diverse workforce is empowered to serve our diverse community.”

Brister has a Master of Business Administration in healthcare administration from the University of Phoenix. She is actively involved in numerous community organizations, including the York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program (YCCOSP) of York College of Pennsylvania; the York Jewish Community Center, where she serves on the board; the Confronting Racism Coalition and Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties, where she previously served as board president.

They're no dummies: These high-tech manikins help to train staff at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital has opened a high-tech classroom that will allow WellSpan clinical staff to improve and apply their patient care skills

The Dart Foundation Clinical Simulation Lab includes two life-size, interactive manikins, “Sim Man” and “Sim Mom,” which can simulate particular breathing patterns, heart rates, bowel sounds, or other symptoms associated with illnesses or health care problems.

By observing and interacting with the manikins, clinicians can get hands-on training in providing care to patients who are in cardiac arrest, giving birth, having an asthma attack, suffering a diabetic emergency and experiencing a wide variety of other health care issues.

The lab, which is on the second floor of the hospital, is expected to provide annual training to about 600 staff members, including nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, paramedics and other clinicians.

“With this new simulation lab, our clinical staff can learn by doing, in a safe environment,” said Tina Citro, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. “We are grateful to our donors for providing the opportunity for staff to practice their skills, work together as a team and get immediate feedback on what they did.”

The lab has videotape equipment that can capture training as it occurs in the lab. The lab includes a room with video monitors and a space for staff to gather, watch their training sessions and be debriefed by instructors.

Supported by the Ephrata Community Health Foundation, the $300,000 classroom was funded by donations and grants, including a $50,000 grant from the Dart Foundation as well as gifts from community donors and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital physicians and staff.

The Ephrata Community Health Foundation is a community-based, not-for-profit corporation that exists to inspire gifts and grants to support the health and well-being of northern Lancaster County residents. The Dart Foundation, a private family foundation established by Dart Container Corporation founder William A. Dart and his wife Claire T. Dart, supports projects that enhance education, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, and those that improve the quality of life in specific communities.

WellSpan Philhaven launches new electronic health record

WellSpan Philhaven has begun the process of launching a new electronic health record system that will help to transform the way it delivers behavioral health care across the region.
Beginning this week, the regional behavioral health organization will transition to an advanced record system, starting with its Mt. Gretna-based inpatient units, lab, pharmacy, patient access and registration, among other services. Its outpatient services in Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties will adopt the system in stages through the end of the year.
WellSpan Philhaven locations in York and Adams counties, and its inpatient unit at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital in Lancaster County, have already adopted the new system.
The system, a product of Epic – a leading national health care software firm based in Wisconsin – will allow patients to more easily connect with their care team. It also will allow for better coordination of patients’ care across WellSpan’s locations in central Pennsylvania.
Epic allows WellSpan Philhaven to maintain all of its patient information on one electronic health record platform, providing one record for patients no matter where they receive care in the system.
Phil Hess, senior vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan Philhaven, said the transition to the new electronic health record system fits with the organization’s longstanding mission of “finding a better way” to serve its patients.
“The new system saves our caregivers time and makes them more efficient, allowing them more time to spend with our patients,” he said. “It lets us focus on their most important job, which is helping our patients to achieve better mental and emotional health.”
WellSpan Philhaven’s transition is just the latest phase in WellSpan Health’s care transformation initiative that began in 2014 as an effort to consolidate the growing health system’s multiple electronic health record systems into one, unified platform.
In 2017, WellSpan transitioned its hospitals, physician offices and outpatient locations in Adams, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties to the Epic system. WellSpan locations in Franklin and Cumberland counties are scheduled to transition to Epic in October 2020.

WellSpan Health to expand access to urgent, primary care in York County

WellSpan Health is increasing access to care in York County with two new WellSpan Urgent Care locations and a WellSpan Family Medicine practice – all set to open later this year.

A new WellSpan Urgent Care is planned to open at 4050 N. George St. Ext. in the Manchester area in late summer. In September, WellSpan will open an urgent care center at 2149 S. Queen St. in York, just off Exit 16 of Interstate 83 at the former South York Diner.

Also in September, WellSpan Family Medicine will open at 3193 Cape Horn Road in Red Lion.

“WellSpan has its deepest roots in York County, and expanding services for our neighbors will always be a priority,” said Thomas McGann, M.D., executive vice president for clinical practice, WellSpan Health. “Whether building a relationship with a family doctor or squeezing in an urgent care visit for your child’s poison ivy, we offer the options you need for the care you need.”

The WellSpan Family Medicine practice on Cape Horn Road will offer a full range of primary care services for patients of all ages, including preventative care, annual physical exams, women’s healthcare, treatment of short-term illness, flu shots and immunizations. The practice will be accepting new patients.

The South York and Manchester area urgent care centers will be the fifth and sixth WellSpan Urgent Care locations in York County, making a total of nine across southcentral Pennsylvania. Other locations include: West York, East Market Street in York, Hanover, Shrewsbury, Gettysburg, Ephrata and Lititz.

WellSpan Health acquired the Manchester area and Red Lion locations from ExpressCare Urgent Care Centers. These locations closed earlier this spring.

Urgent care patients can take advantage of an online service called “Reserve My Spot,” which allows them to choose a time slot that suits their schedule. This can be done via smartphones, computer, tablets or at an in-person check-in kiosk at the office.

“We have parents who reserve their spot before even leaving their house,” said Creston Tate, D.O., WellSpan medical director of urgent care. “We know there are only so many hours in the day. Having a nearby WellSpan Urgent Care center means you don’t have choose between tight schedules and your health.”

All WellSpan Urgent Care locations are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, caring for patients age 3 months and older suffering from coughs and minor illnesses to strains and possible bone fractures. All WellSpan Urgent Care centers offer X-ray services.

For more information on WellSpan services offered across York County, visit WellSpan.org/York.

WellSpan Health and community partners receive 2019 ‘Living the Vision’ Award

Many of the community partners in the three programs recognized by the Hospital and Heathsystem Association of Pennsylvania’s 2019 “Living the Vision” Award this year gather on the steps of the York County Administrative Center. Nonprofits, agencies and local government all played a vital role in efforts to address the critical issues of housing insecurity and continuing care access.

Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania recognizes York County initiatives aimed at addressing housing insecurity among patients

WellSpan Health has been recognized, along with its community partners, with the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) 2019 “Living the Vision” Award for innovative efforts to address housing insecurity for its most vulnerable patients in York County.

The award is the highest honor given by HAP every year to one hospital or health system in Pennsylvania that demonstrates accomplishments in all dimensions of the “Triple Aim” of health care – improving population health and the patient experience, while reducing health care costs.

WellSpan’s winning initiative focused on its efforts to help patients who no longer need care in a hospital but do not have a safe and appropriate place to go and therefore cannot leave. The health system worked with community partners in York County to develop three programs that provide temporary housing for these patients, while also ensuring they get the ongoing care they need.

“Many people in our community lack stable housing. When a severe illness strikes, they may not have a home to return to,” said Charles H. Chodroff, M.D., senior vice president and chief clinical officer, WellSpan Health. “We're proud of our partnership with so many community agencies that helps us get those we serve back to a stable home environment.”

The three projects included in this initiative are:

  • Omega Bed Lease Program. Started through an agreement with York County to coordinate care between WellSpan York Hospital and Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and since expanded, WellSpan leases skilled nursing beds to provide a short-term transition setting for patients who no longer need hospital-based care but face obstacles to timely and appropriate discharge. WellSpan also works with patients on paperwork necessary to secure longer-term care – a significant barrier for many patients.
  • Arches to Wellness. This recuperative care program launched in 2017 and provides patients a temporary place to stay in a local personal care home, while they receive care for short-term medical care needs. Patients in this program receive clinical services such as primary care, home health, pharmacy and case management, as well as help to secure a source of income.
  • ALPHA Community Initiative. Led by the Healthy York County Coalition and supported by WellSpan, this community partnership works to help sustain and expand the ability of personal care homes to serve low-income Pennsylvanians. The initiative, a public-private partnership, includes a cross-section of housing, health and human services stakeholders – all with the shared goal of identifying and implementing sustainable solutions for personal care homes. These efforts include educating elected officials regarding the negative impacts of static reimbursement rates for personal care homes.

The Omega Bed and Arches to Wellness programs together have saved an estimated $1.9 million in health care costs. But it’s the individual patients who have benefited most, said Ann Kunkel, senior director of Case Management for WellSpan Health, who leads these initiatives for the health system.

“These are the people who are invisible in our community, and we are putting faces to the invisible,” Kunkel said. “When we are able to treat each individual with respect and dignity, recognize their needs and meet them where they are on their journey, our neighbors are not only able to recover better from their conditions. They are able to begin their path to a healthier life.”

The award-winning efforts were data-driven to target a critical community health need. But, Kunkel noted, many of the programs that were developed to address this problem required expertise that went beyond those traditionally found in the health care setting.

“We needed people who were experts on these issues involved with us, and the community truly rose to this need,” Kunkel said. “It has been so gratifying to see the changes for the better that have occurred thanks to our successful partnerships.”

The WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary is shifting its fundraising efforts from the Lebanon Street Fair to the Lebanon Area Fair.
The auxiliary held its final Lebanon Street Fair in 2018, which was its 70th year.
This year, the auxiliary will hold its Festival of Themed Baskets event at the Lebanon Area Fair, 80 Rocherty Road, from July 20 to 27. The event is a raffle of baskets, featuring everything from baby items to backyard grills, that are donated by departments at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital as well as area businesses.
“We cherish the many friendships and the happy memories we made at the Street Fair,” said Auxiliary President Gina Boehler. “We will honor that tradition by finding new ways to serve the hospital and look forward to continued community support at the Lebanon Area Fair.”
During its 98-year history, the auxiliary has raised $2.7 million for the benefit of the hospital, selling jarred jams and homemade aprons in its early years and holding fashion shows and holiday bazaars in recent years.
The all-volunteer group has provided more than $400,000 in healthcare career scholarships, provided $150,000 to the WellSpan Sechler Family Cancer Center, purchased portable X-ray machines and paid for renovations to the hospital’s New Beginning Birth Suites.

Annual summer program is back, promoting physical activity and reading

For the 12th consecutive year, children and families across York County are encouraged to “Get Outdoors (GO)” through the GO York! program.

GO! York is an annual partnership between WellSpan Health and York County Libraries. Promoting reading and physical activity for children during the summer, the GO York! initiative officially kicks off June 1 and will run through Sunday, Aug. 18.

“The partnership with York County Libraries continues to enhance the opportunities for families to participate in physical activity and reading,” said Sandy Gladfelter, WellSpan Health Educator, Community Health and Wellness. “As this program continues to grow, the number of children and adults out exploring the state and local parks throughout York County is expanding. Connecting the physical aspect of the hikes with corresponding books in the libraries brings the program full circle – exercising the body and mind. It is a very unique and special program offering local residents a fun, safe, family activity.”

Each year the free program encourages children and parents to get outdoors and be physically active by engaging in an adaptation of letterboxing, a hobby in which participants must follow written clues to locate hidden items. This year, the program focuses on launch pads with the theme, “GO and Explore the Universe!”

Through the GO York! program, 30 wooden posts with an attached etched rubbing plate are hidden in various parks and along trails in York County. Participants use a crayon or colored pencil to rub the picture on the etched plate onto the corresponding page within their activity book. Participants are also encouraged to share photos of their GO hunts, and offer tips, via the program’s Facebook page.

Kids who turn in their etching sheets with at least three completed etchings will receive a prize. Additional grand prizes will be awarded, based on the number of etched rubbings completed.

Last year, York County Libraries distributed more than 9,000 GO and Make Music! Musical Score rubbing sheets.

“GO York! is an integral part of the York County Libraries SummerQuest program. Children and families look forward every year to exploring area parks through this unique physical activity program,” says Deb Sullivan, community relations director for York County Libraries.” “It provides a natural teaching opportunity for parents to introduce their children to nature and the healthy habit of exercise while having fun as a family.”

Since launching the GO program in York County 12 years ago, WellSpan has worked with other libraries throughout its service area to expand the program to Adams, Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

The GO program in all four counties is funded through WellSpan Health’s Community Partnership Grant Program. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that improve the health of the communities and people WellSpan serves.

Advanced-specialty care center to offer comprehensive, expert cardiac care

WellSpan Health leaders and staff joined with community members Thursday to officially break ground on the new, state-of-the-art WellSpan Heart & Vascular Center adjacent to the Apple Hill Health Campus in York Township.

The two-story, 60,520-square-foot facility will streamline patient access to comprehensive cardiovascular services in one location, including: cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiovascular surgery, heart failure clinic, cardiac rehabilitation and non-invasive heart center.

“The WellSpan Heart & Vascular Center is an example of WellSpan’s focus to become easier to use and create greater access to specialty care, closer to home,” said Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., president and CEO, WellSpan Health. “Our roots in York County run deep. What started as a three-story hospital on a hill is now the largest, most comprehensive and only locally governed health system in Central Pennsylvania. This center is the next chapter of that story.”

The building was designed to foster collaboration among WellSpan’s highly skilled physicians and care teams, as they provide some of the region’s most advanced cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment options available.

“Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in both men and women,” said William Nicholson, M.D., interventional cardiologist, WellSpan Cardiology. “That’s why WellSpan employs a specialized team of board-certified cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and vascular surgeons that bring decades of experience to every procedure.”

The center will feature a cardiac rehabilitation gym that extends onto a rooftop garden, providing a calm, healing environment for patients, visitors and staff alike. The grounds of the center will also include walking trails and expanded parking.

Local farm market, J-Mar Farms, will continue to offer fresh produce at a new stand to be constructed on the property.

“J-Mar is such an important part of this community and promoting healthy eating of farm fresh produce on the grounds of our Heart & Vascular Center is a win-win,” said Thomas McGann, executive vice president, WellSpan Health.

Additional highlights include a café on the first floor and a demonstration kitchen to help teach patients and families how to prepare and cook heart-healthy meals.

The estimated cost of the project is $33 million, and it is expected to be complete by fall 2020.

Construction has begun on a new community health and wellness center that will provide access to primary care, behavioral health care and other essential health services to Lebanon County residents.

The center will be located at the WellSpan Dixon Foundation Health Center, at Fourth and Willow streets, Lebanon. It will open in early 2020. The center will include a new 7,000-square-foot office for Family First Health, a regional health care provider for vulnerable patients chosen as the primary care partner for the health and wellness center. The Family First Health office will include 12 exam rooms on the first level of the Dixon Center.

To provide easy access to Family First Health, a new entrance is being added off the rear parking lot of the WellSpan Dixon Foundation Health Center. The entrance also will give patients and visitors access to other services located in the building, including WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital’s rehabilitation unit, WellSpan Family Medicine – North Fourth Street and WellSpan diabetes and nutrition counselors.

A future phase of the project will add a community room.

The $3.5 million project has been funded by a $2 million gift from the Francis J. Dixon Foundation and funding from the state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).

“We are excited to see the new center take shape,” said Frank Dixon, chairman emeritus of the Dixon Foundation. “It will help Lebanon County residents receive care and stay healthy, ensuring a brighter future for our entire community.”

Family First Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center with six sites in Lancaster, York and Adams counties. It is equipped to help patients address barriers to care that are often experienced by the 30 percent of Lebanon County residents living in poverty. In addition to primary care, Family First provides dental care, substance abuse treatment, HIV care and social services.

A 14-member community advisory group of Lebanon leaders, which is helping to guide the development of the center, chose Family First Health as the primary care partner for the center.

“This center will play a vital role in the health of Lebanon County,” said Tom Harlow, senior vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. “We are grateful to community leaders who have provided their financial support and their guidance as we work toward the opening of the center.”

Family First will collaborate with others serving vulnerable populations including other Federally Qualified Health Centers in the area as well as the providers at WellSpan Family Medicine – North Fourth Street, with the shared goal of improving the health of Lebanon County residents.
