The Joint Commission cites WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and Ephrata Community Hospital

The Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality 2012WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and Ephrata Community Hospital were recently named as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission.

The WellSpan hospitals were recognized for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions.

Ephrata Community and Gettysburg hospitals are two of 1,099 hospitals in the U.S. earning this year’s distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance.

WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital was recognized for its achievement on the following measure sets: heart failure; pneumonia; and surgical care. Ephrata Community Hospital was recognized for achievements in the pneumonia and surgical care measures.

“We understand that what matters most to patients is safe, effective care and we continue to work every day to improve.  We’re extremely proud to again receive the distinction of being a Joint Commission Top Performer, but frankly, the most important recognition we receive is when the patients and families we serve tell us 'job well done,'" said Jane Hyde, president of WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and senior vice president, WellSpan Health.

This year’s recognition marks the second time that WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has been named a Joint Commission Top Performer. The hospital was also recognized in 2011.

"Ephrata Community Hospital is proud to be recognized by The Joint Commission for safe, quality care that patients expect from their hospital experience. We are able to achieve this honor through the teamwork of our employees, medical staff and volunteers," said John Porter, president of Ephrata Community Hospital and senior vice president, WellSpan.

This marks the first time that Ephrata Community Hospital has received this honor from The Joint Commission.

To be named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, Gettysburg and Ephrata hospitals had to achieve:

  • A cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures
  • Performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases
  • At least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set all applicable individual accountability measures have a performance rate of 95 percent or above.

A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – examples include giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, or providing a home management plan of care for children with asthma.

The Top Performer ratings are based on an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2012 calendar year.
