Capital BlueCross recently named WellSpan York Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center in Cardiac Care.
The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care – which expanded recently to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety.

Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions, than similar facilities or health systems. The program also provides patients with tools to help them make better informed healthcare decisions.
The selection process takes into consideration quality, cost and access. This designation provides patients with standards to help them understand the value in specialty care facilities that are recognized as Blue Distinction Centers.
WellSpan York Hospital received its designation by:
- Establishing a nationally consistent and continually evolving approach to evaluating quality and safety
- Incorporating quality measures with meaningful impact, including delivery system features and specific quality outcomes to which all can aspire
- Establishing a nationally consistent, equitable and objective approach that addresses market and consumer demand for cost savings and affordable healthcare
- Considering consumer access while achieving the program’s overall goal of providing differentiated performance on quality and cost of care
