WAYNESBORO, Pa. - When an employee retires, they typically receive some cards, kind words from their colleagues and maybe some cake.
When Waynesboro resident and longtime WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital nurse Barb Bock retired earlier this month after 40 years as a registered nurse on the Critical Care Unit, she received something even more meaningful - a DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.
"When I think of Barb, I think of compassion," said Melissa Dick, director of patient services at the hospital. "She cared for every patient with compassion and respect. She has a calming demeanor that supported many patients and families through some of the darkest and scariest moments."
The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award is a way for staff to honor fellow nurses who have dedicated their careers to nursing and who embody the values of the organizations they serve, as well as The DAISY Foundation.
"Barb is respected by her patients, her peers, her leaders and the providers. The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award is one way that we can say, 'thank you,' to Barb for her 40 years," added Dick.
Laura Velasquez, Bock's nurse manager on the CCU, said she will be missed and leaves behind a legacy not only as a nurse, but as a mentor to new nurses.
"She is an inspiration to staff with her attention to patient care and advocacy for her patients. There is only one Barb and she will be sorely missed."
