The many changes impacting the country’s health care system, both nationally and at the local level, will be the main topic of Healthy Adams County’s seventh annual Adams County Community Health Summit on Thursday, June 12, at HACC-Gettysburg Campus.

The free, day-long event is co-sponsored by Healthy Adams County, WellSpan Health and HACC.

“We’re looking forward to a day of sharing valuable health care information specific to issues impacting people here in Adams County,” said Kathy Gaskin, executive director, Healthy Adams County.

This year's keynote speakers are Kevin Mosser, MD, CEO and president, WellSpan Health, and Jane Hyde, senior vice president, WellSpan Health and president, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. Mosser and Hyde will focus on the significant health care changes we are facing, and how we are addressing them locally.

Following the keynote presentation, attendees will be able to choose two workshop sessions from the following six topics that touch on many of Healthy Adams County’s strategic priorities:

  • Health Insurance Is Good – What You Can Do to Ensure More People Have Coverage? Presenters Jenny Englerth, Family First Health, and Eve Gardner, Healthy York Network, will share their experiences with the first insurance marketplace open enrollment period.
  • Create a Partnership for Your Health
Who is the most important member of your health care team? It's you. Come learn about who else is part of your health care team, what to expect from them, how to choose "Dr. Right," and the resources to help you get involved in your care. Presenters are Kathy Hutcheson and Samantha Obeck of Aligning Forces for Quality.
  • Impacting Social Norms Through Family Nutrition Literacy
Join an interactive discussion on community and personal solutions affecting family health and nutrition concerns. Presenters are Betsy Wargo, WellSpan Health, and Rayna Cooper, Penn State Extension.
  • Treating Anxiety and Mood Disorders: Psychopharmacology and Beyond
Back by popular demand, presenter Paul Mazeroff, director of training for TrueNorth Wellness Services, will examine the various medications used to treat mood and anxiety disorders. He also will look at some of the controversies surrounding these medications.
  • Asking the Right Questions
Do you know there is a difference between palliative care and hospice? Are you curious about how each of these programs can help you and your loved ones when they are facing a life-threatening illness? Do you know when you should talk to your doctor about these programs? Presenters are Ann Norwich, CRNP, WellSpan Hospitalists, and Jody Pritt, LSW, AseraCare Hospice.
  • So You Say You Are Feeling Suicidal…
Jayne Wildasin, crisis intervention director, TrueNorth Wellness Services, will focus on what to do when someone you know tells you they are feeling suicidal.

The summit’s afternoon session will be a special screening of the PBS documentary, U.S. Health Care: The Good News, which explores positive efforts to provide low-cost, quality health care in the U.S.

The health summit begins with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. A continental breakfast and buffet lunch will be provided.

The summit is aimed at health and human service professionals, community leaders and anyone interested in learning more about these important issues.
