Catherine Fraley, MD, a WellSpan York Hospital Emergency Medicine resident, and Reda Willis, RN, prevention and outreach coordinator for WellSpan York Hospital and Trauma Services, were recently recognized by the American Trauma Society, Pennsylvania Division.
Fraley received the H. Arnold Muller, MD, Award, which is presented to an emergency medicine resident who exemplifies the caring and compassionate ways of Dr. Muller.
Willis received a Trauma Prevention Award. She was recognized for her leadership and dedication to trauma prevention education.
Fraley has been fascinated by medicine most of her life – even carrying Band-Aids to elementary school in the event any of her classmates hurt themselves.
She believes patients deserve the best possible care during the entire process, from the 911 call to the patient’s final disposition and follow up.
Her dedication to her patients and the medical process is why she was chosen to receive the H. Arnold Muller, MD, Award.
Her nominator wrote, “I was fortunate to train under Dr. Muller, and I know that Dr. Fraley would be an excellent representative, who reflects Dr. Muller’s principles and commitment to excellence in trauma care and emergency medicine.”
Willis’ nursing career has focused on the trauma population, centering on quality care as a bedside nurse and educator in the trauma/surgical intensive care unit. She leads injury prevention initiatives for WellSpan York Hospital, and encourages the bedside nurse to complete prevention education with patients.
One of her most influential initiatives involves the screening of, and brief intervention for, risky alcohol use and abuse in the adult population. Currently, trauma centers are requested to complete a risk assessment on trauma patients regarding risk behavior related to drugs and alcohol.
Willis led the initiative to screen all trauma admissions, regardless of their blood alcohol content. The significant findings of these screenings led her to develop a hospital-wide protocol to screen all patients.
She has now extended this to special age-specific screenings for patients ages 12 to 17. She has transitioned the entire process to the electronic health record, making it transparent to all WellSpan caregivers.
